How can I make cleaning a litter box more earth friendly?

I know a lot of people will laugh but you hear so much about trying to do anything to cut back on using plastic bags and such to help the earth... but what can I use/do instead of cleaning it and putting the poop/pee in a plastic bag?? i cant flush it cause the litter on it would probably mess up the septic tank or something. and i don't think i can teach my cat to use the toilet sooooo... any ideas?
