Why do we live in a fallen world because of Adam and Eve's sin...is God punishing us for their sin?

When Adam and Eve sinned they deserved to be punished for it. But why do we also have to contend with the effects of their sin...such as living in a fallen world where there's disease, etc. Are we also being punished for their sin?
