What is the meaning of this poem?

The basic message of this poem is the human condition of being utterly unsatisfied and thinking that the gr is always greener on the other side of the fence. The poem also describes the slow progression to more and more extremes in an effort to satisfy the soul. Ultimately, however, the narrator's soul has become so jaded that only something totally unattainable will do.
