Wet Leather shoes please help?

My hubby got stuck in a rain storm on his motorcycle and so his brand new steel toe leather shoes were soaked. Now they smell like death. Mildew and moldy smelling. Is disgusting and by far the worse smell I've ever experienced. Please help with a remedy. I tried baking soda Lots of baking soda! Still really smelly and we just bought these shoes that aren't easy to come by. So I don't want to get new ones unless all else fails! Thanks in Advance
