Anyone who has read the watchmen comic?

in chapter two there is a flashback scene of Dr. Manhattan and the comedian in Vietnam during the funeral. i need to figure out the "symbolic significance of this sequence" and the only thing i can come up with is since its a funeral, the flashback will have a greater impact on our emotions. your ideas??
