Can I use car oil in my Craftsman Lawnmower?

I am running low on oil and I have no idea what kind to put in it i lost the manual. My husband (a truckdriver out on the road) said I can use the stiff in the car, is that true? I dont want to hurt the lawnmower but i mean isnt 1 oil like another?
