The Klan that was around in the 1860s after the War was not the KKK you think of today. Run by figures such as Nathan Forrest , it was devoted mostly to fending off carpetbagger attacks, unfair taxing and evictions of Southern residents. When it became more racist and violent, it was disbanded as it was seen to be detrimental to the South and only continuing the Federal occupation. It was not revived until 1915, after the racist movie "Birth of a Nation" was released. Thats that racist klan you think of today
