Metformin and alcohol?

I've seen this question asked quite a few times on here but only from actual diabetics. My doctor put me on Metformin because my pancreas are making insulin faster than they should be (I have not been actually diagnosed with type 2 diabetes yet). Now I don't normally drink but tomorrow night a couple of my friends are getting together and we want to have some fun. Can I consume a few beers while on Metformin?
